Tim "Dr. Dog" Bradach

February 12, 1948 — October 16, 2014

Tim Bradach at 2011 Mn Blues Hall of Fame

The Minnesota Blues community has lost an old friend. Tim Bradach died of cancer on October 16. A gathering of friends is planned for Saturday, November 1, 3 pm at Palmer's Bar on the West Bank to reminisce and celebrate Tim's life.

Tim's association with the Minnesota Blues Society goes back to the early days when he was instumental in helping to document some of our historical research on Minnesota Blues musicians. More recently, Tim served on the Minnesota Blues Hall of Fame Committee. In 2011, Tim himself was inducted into the Hall of Fame in recognition of his work in promoting and recording Minnesota Blues musicians on his Cold Wind Records label.

So long, Dr. Dog. We're going to miss you. — Jake Jacobson

Back At It by Big George Jackson Blues Band

Big George Jackson
- Back At It
Tops "Best Self-Produced CD" Competition

The Back At It CD by Big George Jackson Blues Band was selected by a panel of judges to represent Minnesota at the 2015 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN in the "Best Self-Produced CD" Competition. The other seven entries in this year's field were Designated Rider by The Abiders, New Ground by Bob Bingham, Blues At Barkin' Jack's by Doug Otto & Hurricane Harold, Live From The Park Theater by Jimmi and the Band of Souls, Mike Munson by Mike Munson, The Blues Is Personal by Nigel Egg and Rock-A-Doodle-Blue the The Rhythm Roosters.

My sincere thanks to the judges who took the time to evaluate these CDs. This was no easy task with eight CDs and the quality of this year's entries. If you have not heard these acts I would encourage you to seek them out on the Blues Gig Calendar and buy their CDs. Once again, I am amazed at how truly blessed we are to have such a plethora of musical talent in Minnesota.

The Minnesota Blues Society is now accepting blues CDs released between October 1, 2014 - September 30, 2015 for the 2016 competition. CDs must be received by October 1, 2015. See CD Competition for details. — Jake Jacobson

Call For Volunteers

We could use some volunteers to help with the two upcoming Road To Memphis Fundraiser events on the 9th and 16th of November. For the most part we need people to watch the merchandise table, help with membership information and collect donations. The more people who volunteer, the more shifts we can have and the less time each person will have to work. Meet new people. Have fun. Contact: christina@mnbs.orgVolunteer Committee

The Winner is …
The Black Water Blues Band
2014 Road To Memphis
Youth Showcase Challenge

There were a couple winners in Sunday evening’s Minnesota Blues Society’s Road To Memphis Youth Showcase competition at the The Underground Music Café in St Paul. The Black Water Blues Band was judged best of the four acts competing, with first runner-up, Colin Campbell and the C-Notes. A third place tie between Sit Jazz Down and Since Tuesday rounded out the scoring.

It was great to see a full house and supportive fans enjoy the competition. All of the acts were full of enthusiasm and the judge’s comments indicated that the future for these groups looks promising. The Black Water Blues Band is composed of Zach Avery on guitar and vocals, Dylan Salfer on guitar and vocals, Ethan Teel hittin’ the drums and Theo Zimmerman-Bence on bass guitar.

Congratulations to Jack Campbell and Tim Cheesebrow for driving the Youth Showcase and making the event a success. Also, hats off to Christina Hoglund, Volunteer Coordinator and the many volunteers including the judges, time-keepers, scorekeeper, merchandise-handlers and door monitors who pitched in. Thanks to the Underground Music Café and their staff for hosting the event. Special thanks to the C-Notes for providing and transporting the back-line equipment. Also, thanks again to Tim Cheesebrow for keeping things moving as emcee. To all the acts that played their hearts out, thank you so much. And finally, thank you to all of the blues fans who showed up to support the music on such a beautiful Sunday evening. — Richard Schaefer

You can show your support for the Youth Showcase act that has been selected to represent Minnesota at the 2015 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN by making a tax-deductible donation to the funds to help offset their travel expenses.
