Rectification CD

As with many events and competitions this past year, the annual "Best Self-Produced CD" competition was somewhat sparse in 2021. That's not to say that MnBS won't have great representation at 2022 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennesse. On the contrary, both of this year's competing CDs were of top quality.

The winner of the 2021 competition is Rectification by Jay Walter & the Rectifiers. The CD is comprised of eleven songs, six of which are originals by Jay Walter Wilkins, three are by Jay Walter Wilkins and John Franken, one is by John Franken and one is a Jimmy Reed tune, "Gonna Find My Baby".

The Rectifiers on this CD represent some of the finest blues musicians in Minnesota: Jay Walter Wilkins, is on vocals and harmonica; John Franken and Dan Schwalbe swap licks on guitar; John Schroder plays bass on four tracks with Chris Johnson on bass for the other seven tracks; Bruce McCabe is featured on piano and Hammond organ; and Victor Span is on drums.

Recorded at Jeremy Johnson's Barking Jack Studio in North St Paul, the overall sound has that no-nonsense, quality of the old Chicago blues recordings. The guitar work is dazzling throughout. Bruce McCabe's keyboard is particularly good on the "Mean Hearted Woman" track. The rhythm section is solid throughout the CD and Jay's vocals are strong and his harmonica solos are tight.

So even though Minnesota won't be represented at the 2022 Band and Solo/Duo Challenge, we still get to root for the Rectifiers in the "Best Self-Produced CD" Competition in Memphis. — Jake Jacobson
